How to improve your gas mileage
Even though the price of crude oil has come down in recent weeks, we the consumers have yet to reap the benefits. Gasoline prices have come down slightly in my neighbor in Northern California but I'm still paying over $4.00 dollars for a gallon of high octane gasoline. I still need to get around town and keep some of my hard earned money in my pocket. This got me to thinking about what the average motorist can do to save as much gasoline as they can and to stay out of the gas stations for as long as possible. I came up with the following tips for the average consumer:
- Make sure that your tires are inflated according to your cars owners manual or tires recommendation. Under inflated tires causes your engine to work a little harder resulting in more gasoline consumption.
- Not all gasoline is the same. Again check your owners manual for the recommended octane for your car. Using a gasoline with the improper octane can cause your engine to not function the way it was designed to by reducing the power of the car and causing excessive carbon build up in your engine.
- Maintain the posted speed limit. The speed limit is not only for safety reasons but also maximizes your car's fuel economy resulting in better mileage.
- Let your car coast to stop signs and traffic lights. There is no reason to speed up to a stop and then apply the brakes hard in order to stop in time. This is not only dangerous but also wastes gasoline and lowers your mileage.
- For drivers of manual transmissions, when going down embankments, shift into nuetral until you feel your car loosing power. This will improve your gasoline mileage by keeping your engine's rpm's low thus saving gasoline.
All of the ideas above are a good start to increasing your gasoline mileage but what else, I thought, can be done do our cars to get even better mileage and miles per gallon as well as making our rides more exhilarating. I found my answers at . The people at Motorintakes understand that you need to get the most of your tank of gasoline and have done their homework to come up with a list of aftermarket products that address this very question no matter what type of car or truck you are driving from a little economy gas miser to a monster truck. The results of their homework follows:
- Cold Air Intakes and Performance Filters: One of the least expensive and easiest products you can install to get better gas mileage is a cold air intake or performance air filter. Your engine requires energy to breath and run at peak performance. Even pulling air in requires energy. The more cold air you can get into your engine the more energy saved, resulting in better fuel economy. High flow performance air filters are washable and re-useable, they help increase power and throttle response as well as helping you gain a few more miles from your fuel tank.
- Performance Exhaust Systems: An inefficiently designed factory exhaust system can rob your engine of power and economy. For example, imagine the amount of pressure it takes to blow air through a plastic coffee stirrer compared to how much pressure it takes to blow the same amount of air through a straw. Because of the restriceted opening of the coffee stirrer it was much harder to get the air through the stirrer compared to the straw. If your engine is always struggling to force the exhaust gases out, then it is wasting fuel to get the job done. A larger diameter system with smooth mandrel bent radiuses will give you better gas mileage and additional power from your engine.
- Performance Chips ( ECU Computer Chips): Many of today's engines are capable of significantly more power than they have when they are sold at the dealership. A computer chip essentially makes adjustments to the engines ECU which result in power increases. Many times, the changes the performance chip does will result in an increase to your gasoline mileage.
- Fuel Additives: Fuel additives give your gasoline a boost in power by injecting ingredients that increases your gases octane which results in more power for your engine and better gasoline mileage for your pocket book.
Hopefully this article will give you some ideas to save you some money at the gas pumps as well as give you a place to check out some fabulous products that not only will increase your gasoline mileage but will also bring out the real performance of your car or truck.
